Peter Johnston taught elementary school in New Zealand before coming to the United States to earn his Ph.D. - and meet (in the library) his lovely wife of 45 years. Professor emeritus at The University at Albany, he researches the relationships among classroom talk, engagement, and children’s social, emotional and literate development. Perversely, he believes that education is about apprenticing children into humanity. Grandparenting, multiple awards for his research, and his election to the Reading Hall of Fame clearly establish his "old fart" status. Outside research in classrooms, find him gardening, playing soccer or singing in pubs, the latter with a glass of New Zealand sauvignon blanc in hand.
